Lesson Update 05/12/2012

Lesson Update (Nathan Hunter and Joe Tindale)

This is the editing for the main part of the opening sequence of the song. We have decided to use a slip screen effect and this has been created using freeze frames and cropping the clips down to a certain size to all fit in one window. This adds more attention to detail on the first part of the song and also gives the video an edge to be admired by the audience. However, to avoid repetition we have decided to only add this in the opening scene rather than the whole video.

Rough Cut 2

Rough Cut 2

This is our second rough cut produced fo the video, we have added a different opening which is a compilation of footage we took for the beginning of the song. this split screen effect allows the audience to keep their attention focused on the song and video yet diverts their attention elsewhere on the screen. This isn't abrupt however as before the footage has been moved, a still image showing the beginning of the scene appears on screen so that the audience are ready for it and don't have to struggle to keep up with the track itself. Also we have added extra narrative shots and also have added different lengths and jump cuts in the track to make the video look more professional. We are yet to continue this however and will finish the video in the upcoming weeks.

27/11/2012 Lesson Update

Within this lesson, all members in the group have been working on the editing of our final media production and also some of the draft work for the advert we are yet to create. The work we have been doing was really productive and we managed to get a whole verse edited properly and an advert mocked up yet we are creating more variations of the advert so that we can produce the best quality one possible. As you can see in the pictures included we have been working quickly on the editing and also during the advert we have created different background textures to give it a gritty feel ad to help entice our target audience.

Digipak Draft

This is the draft cover for our digipak, this would be the back panel yet it shows us the colours for the front and the overall colour scheme for the Digipak itself. we have decided to use these colours to show a dusty, sandy texture to emphasise the meaning of the song and for a more literal meaning, the song name. as out digipak is mainly aimed at a fairly mainstream audience, we would ensure that the Digipak was able to be used within the genre and that it would fit with the rest of our music promo package

Rough Cut 1

Rough Cut 1 - The Road

This rough cut is the first part of editing we have used for this song. We are yet to add effects in the beginning of the song similar to that of a split screen effect. As this is only a small part of the song we ave successfully edited I think that some of the shots will need re-shooting and we will get that done as soon a possible. Also I feel that the song itself is balanced out quite well between performance and narrative shots yet I need to add some more varied shots i.e. Close ups, Long Shots, Different Angles, Different focuses.

Storyboard (Narrative Ideas)

This is the storyboard myself and Joe Tindale have developed for the narrative ideas we have come up with for the song, as we don't quite know what parts of the song we would include these ideas yet we will place this into our shooting schedule and animatic so that it becomes clearer to view the shots. these are subject to change within the editing and filming though so if we have any new ideas then we will include those instead.

Storyboard (Last Verse to the Finish)

This is the storyboard that myself and Joe Tindale have developed for the Last section of the song. it shows the different camera angles we have decided would suit this part of the song as it ends rather suddenly in the music. We have tried not to repeat ourselves as much compared to the other sections in terms of camera shots and angles yet some of the shots look rather familiar as this was unavoidable for us. we do however, know that whilst filming we may experiment with a variety of shots for the different people and parts within it. This will ensure that we have a variety of shots and that the video does not repeat itself as often as we can make it so.

Storyboard (Solo)

These are the shots for the guitar solo within the song developed by myself and Joe Tindale. As this is a part mainly focuses on the lead guitarist, we have decided to use a variety of angles within the song and  some interesting ones that are used professionally to make the video seem more authentic and the solo has more emphasis placed upon it. As we will be shooting this particular scene a few times, we would have a lot of shots to choose from so these are subject to change if they don't seem to flow together quite well.

Storyboard (Chorus 1, Verse 2 and Chorus 2)

This is the Storyboard that myself and Joe Tindale have worked on for the first chorus, second verse and second chorus. They show the different ideas we have for angles and some filters we could try and use within the video itself. They also show the different ideas we have in general for the performance and narrative side of the scenes. These ideas are subject to change if we encounter problems with the filming or the editing part of the project, or if we feel like they do not go together quite as well as previously thought.

Storyboard (Intro and Verse 1)

This is the storyboard myself and Joe Tindale created for our music video - specifically the Intro and First Verse. It show a visual representation of our ideas previously posted in a word document. It shows the shots we intend to use yet these are subject to change if they do not work out when we are filming. It shows the shots of various instruments, camera angles and the different people in view at a certain time in the song.

Digipak Experimentation

Digipak Experimentation

This is the experimentation of the image I had used for my mock Digipak, the tutorial I had used was based around the blending options of Photoshop. I have been fairly successful with this tutorial so far yet it is only part finished as I have yet to finalise the image and therefore have not been able to balance out the opacity of the image as of yet. I have used a variety of tools for this job such as masking (which I used the quick selection, brush and levels options) and the colour blending options (hard light, overlay, soft light and linear) these options and tools helped to create the various different effects and colours shown here. I hope to further progress these options and also to help create the different effects within our own Digipak.

Narrative Ideas (All Members)

Narrative Ideas

This is some of the narrative ideas we have for the music video, it mainly focuses on the feeling of being paranoid, vulnerable, depressed and alone. This will portray some aspects of the lyrics presented within the song and also it allows the audience to make their own assumptions about the narrative and connect to it in their own way. We will expand on these when creating the storyboard and the filming in general, these are just draft idas and therefore do not show specific timings or shot numbers to be used.

Mood Board for Logo Design (Nathan Hunter and Joe Tindale)

Mood Board for Logo Design

This is the mood board for our logo design, this has allowed us to collect some ideas to look at the different things we could incorporate within the design. This has helped us to look at the styles, colours, themes, images and text styles we could include specifically for our logo yet it is also useful as we can keep referring back to this when creating our digipak and advert for some ideas we havent used yet.

Text Effect Test (Nathan Hunter and Joe Tindale)

Text Effect Test

This is one of the text effects that we have experimented with for our digipak and advert. This has now allowed us to have a visual representation of what kind of effects can suit our music promo pack and the genre of the band. This effect is good yet if we had manipulated the colours differently the effect could suit the genre a little more and therefore suit the band more. We are taking this as a test and therefore trying to see what different things we can have within our promotional pack.

Intro and First Verse

Storyboard ideas - First Verse and chorus from NathanHunter_

This is the ideas we have so far for the storyboard. It only shows the ideas for the Intro and First Verse yet only for the performance element of things. We are yet to come up with ideas for the filming of the Narrative part of the video yet within this file, it has detailed elements of the Shot type, where the shot would be, what would be in the framing of the shot, what time in the song it would appear and what different technical aspects of it.

Audience Profile (Nathan Hunter and Joe Tindale)

Audience Profile (Nathan Hunter and Joe Tindale)

This is our Audience Profile page set up on the popular social networking site: Facebook. This page shows that the average member of our target audience keeps up to date with the more current affairs and recent trends and conventions. This shows us that to enable people like this to want to look and view our music video; we would have to keep things new and different so that the shots and video doesn’t seem out-of-date. Also it shows us that the people who like this type of music also enjoy other styles which leaves the idea open that we could include some shots similar to other styles that coincide with this track and the artist. Also our audience profile has been useful in enabling us to come up with the different questions for our audience research questionnaire as we can tailor our questions to things that are relevant with our target audience.

E-mail to "The Studio" (Nathan Hunter)

E-mail to "The Studio"

We have e-mailed one of our locations "The Studio" to ask for permission to use their venue for our music video as it would provide a realistic location for a stage performance. This has allowed us to start to plan our Shooting Schedule for our different locations and also to start to inform the band when we can start shooting the video.

Mood Board - Metallica (All Members)

Mood Board - Metallica

This mood board is a display of various images and stills from previous metallica videos to help provide us with some inspiration for our music video. We have taken images from these videos:
These videos combine both performance styles (Stage and Studio) for different songs yet they also provide a mix of narrative and performance. These show us how we can provide an entertaining video yet still provide a compelling performance, convincing narrative and still stick to the conventions of the genre.

We have also used the Metallica logo and their cover for their album entitled "Metallica" later nicknamed "The Black Album" as this is the album that our song comes from, this also gives us some ideas for the digipak and advert later to be completed for the music promo package.

Logo Design (Nathan Hunter and Joe Tindale)

The following images are the production logo ideas that were created for our record label. For our record label we have decided upon using our initials therefore we have decided on the name NHJT, this is because it tends to be a common trend for smaller artistic companies such as photography companies and film producers.

Created by Nathan Hunter

Created By Joe Tindale

The first image shown was created by Nathan Hunter. It shows guitars which are a widely common convention within rock and metal genres of music and it contains colours such as red and black which can also be linked with rock and heavier genres of music. The contrasting colours are used within the image to give the text and the images a better sense of alignment and order as the position and colour of the text match with the colour of the guitar image.

The second image shown was created by me. I tried to keep with the second images theme of contrasting colours and  only used colours such as black and white because it is uncommon to find a rock album/record label logo which contain brighter, more vibrant colours. I also kept the image theme simple by only using text on a plain background and the end result is something that would more commonly be shown as a photography or a more artistic company logo.

Audience Research (Nathan Hunter)

Audience Research created on the website http://www.linoit.com

This Audience Research pinboard was created to produce the Quiz in an interesting way to entice the audience we are giving it to. We are handing it out to people who are fans of the style of music our music video is based around to help us with creating ours and helping us to narrow our choices down to what we need to put into the video. We are yet to produce our findings on the blog but we are going to present it with visual representations of the findings.

These are the lyrics for the song we are going to use for our music video which is "The Road" by Frank Turner and the timings for each of the lines within the song to give us a rough guide of how much time we have between each verse and how long each line goes on for which will then help us when we are starting to write our storyboard and shooting schedule.
